Is this Normal? Understanding Adolescent Development
During the teenage years when children continue to grow, develop, and explore who they are, it is important to recognize some of the changes in thinking they may experience. Some things you may see in your teen to consider are:
1. An increased sense of self awareness 2. The idea that "Everyone's attention is on me" 3. The belief that "No one can possibly under-stand what I am going through" 4. More sensitivity to criticism 5. A developing tendency to show more assertiveness and expression of opinions 6. The beginning of abstract thinking 7. A stronger development of values and morals
By being aware of these cognitive developments, parents and guardians can gain a better understanding of their teens and how they begin to develop their own unique identities. And one important thing to remember is that every child develops at a different pace!
