Our Sponsored Compassion Child
Life in Nyarugenge - Your sponsored child lives in the hills of Nyarugenge, home to approximately 8,000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, adobe walls, and corrugated tin roofs. The primary ethnic group is Banyarwanda, and the most commonly spoken language is Kinyarwanda. The regional diet consists of maize, beans, and cassava. Common health problems in this area include malaria and worm infestations. Most adults in Nyarugenge are unemployed but some work as farmers and earn the equivalent of $10 per month. This community needs educational resources, employment opportunities, and aid for the many war orphans. Your sponsorship allows the staff of Nyarugenge Student Center to provide your sponsored child with Bible teaching, medical care, nutritious food, health and hygiene education, recreational activities, tuition, tutoring, scholastic materials, and domestic supplies. The center staff will also provide Bible teaching and educational workshops for the parents or guardians of your sponsored child.

Education - The typical school year runs from January to October. Education is free at the primary level for all children. According to UNICEF, 78 percent of students reach the fifth grade.

Rwandans view education as the only way for a hopeful future for their children and parents are concerned about their children's education. Rwanda's educated live in towns, while the non-educated live in remote areas, many times in situations of extreme poverty.

While the government has introduced free education at the primary level, most parents cannot provide the materials for children to go to school, including paper and school uniforms

Compassion in Rwanda - Compassion's work in Rwanda began in 1980. Currently, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 120 projects. Compassion partners with churches to help them provide Rwandan children with the opportunity to rise above their circumstances and become all God has created them to be.
