| H1N1 Update |
|
October 14, 2009 - There have been 2 confirmed cases of students with the H1N1 virus in the district; one at Westfield and one at North Prairie. Based on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control, schools will remain open unless we experience a widespread outbreak. Staff have been given information on symptoms and preventive measures and will continue taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. An informational letter will go home to parents. We are taking this very seriously and if your child doesn't feel well we want them to stay home, but we also want to remind parents that this is a virulent strain of the flu that occurs every year and we do encourage healthy students to continue to come to school.

| Flu Prevention, Symptoms and Care |
|
The best form of prevention is regular hand washing. H1N1 is spread by contact and the hands are the primary means of transfer. All of our classrooms have been equipped with hand sanitizer and we are encouraging students to use it and to wash hands in the bathroom regularly. It is also important that students who have the flu (of any type) not return to school until 24 hours after their fever has subsided. The H1N1 virus has the following symptoms:
- A fever of over 100 degrees
- A strong "barking" cough
- Body aches or chills
- A fast onset (comes on very quickly)
H1N1 should be cared for in the same manner as any other flu, however, if the person has additional health concerns H1N1 can be very serious and they should see a doctor. For more information click the "H1N1 Information" link at left.
