Why Christian Education?
I
feel at times that I am preaching to the choir and yet sometimes I think we
just need reminders of why we do what we do. I picked up a very affirming and
motivating booklet published by the Society for
Your Child. One of the sections
makes the point that a
Our
call as a school is to educate in such a way that our children incorporate
their faith and beliefs into all areas and not live a dualistic life that
separates their life into religious activities and non-religious activities.
When our children complete their education at MVCS it is our goal that our
students would have formed a thought process in which they see all of life’s
activities as service to God. This can be a difficult concept for us to grasp
for it goes against every fiber of our sinful being. Our self-centered nature
says put me first, supply my needs, meet my goals and serve self then give what
is left over to God. This is what the world tells us and it is an easy trap to
fall into. Christian Education is a counter cultural movement but it is a
movement that can truly provide an avenue for the development of a life that is
lived out in its entirety as service to God first and foremost.
I
am encouraged. I see this beginning to happen in the lives of our young people.
I hear about the struggles that some of our students are going through. I see
it on faces and in their lives from time to time. Young people are seeking
answers to relevancy and purpose. Seniors in particular face great challenges.
The safety and security of high school is coming to end. Decision time about
what their next step will be is near. I rest in the fact that I am convinced
that all will face those challenges with the knowledge and understanding that
they have been educated from a Christian perspective and faith based world
view. What they do with that knowledge and understanding will be determined by
them and their relationship with God.
